Best-selling author and columnist Molly Ivins, the sharp-witted liberal who skewered the political establishment and referred to President Bush as “Shrub,” died Wednesday after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 62.
Ivins died at her home while in hospice care, said David Pasztor, managing editor of the Texas Observer, where Ivins was co-editor.
Ivins made a living poking fun at politicians, whether they were in her home state of Texas or the White House. She revealed in early 2006 that she was being treated for breast cancer for the third time. Read more... (241 words, 1 image, estimated 58 secs reading time)

Columnist Art Buchwald, who chronicled the life and times of Washington with a wry wit for over four decades and endeared himself to many with his never-give-up battle with failing kidneys, is dead at 81.
Buchwald’s son, Joel, who was with his father, disclosed the satirist’s death, saying he had passed away quietly at his home late Wednesday with his family.
Buchwald had refused dialysis treatments for his failing kidneys last year and was expected to die within weeks of moving to a hospice on Feb. 7. But he lived to return home and even write a book about his experiences. Read more... (130 words, 1 image, estimated 31 secs reading time)

New York, NY. (Blue Note Records) – Michael Brecker, a versatile and influential tenor saxophonist who won 11 Grammys over a career that spanned more than three decades, died Saturday. He was 57. Brecker died in a hospital in New York of leukemia, according to his longtime friend and manager, Darryl Pitt. In recent years, the saxophonist had struggled with myelodysplastic syndrome, a cancer in which the bone marrow stops producing enough healthy blood cells. NASCAR lost its second champion in less than two weeks when Benny Parsons died Tuesday. He was 65.
Parsons entered the Intensive Care Unit of the Carolinas Medial Center in Charlotte on Dec. 26 due to complications stemming from his battle with lung cancer.
Parsons, the 1973 Winston Cup champion, learned six months ago that he had cancer. He continued to work as a color analyst for NBC after learning about his condition, but missed a couple of races while undergoing treatment.

BORGLOON (ANP) – De bekende kunsthandelaar Robert Noortman is zondagochtend vroeg in zijn huis in het Belgische Borgloon overleden. Dat heeft een vriendin uit de kunstwereld, Monique Scholten, zondag gezegd.
Noortman (60) leed aan kanker, maar overleed plotseling aan een hartaanval. Hij was de initiator van de Pictura, de voorloper van de grote Europese kunstbeurs Tefaf, die in maart weer in Maastricht gehouden wordt.
Noortman kwam diverse keren in het nieuws, onder meer door het aanbieden van drie Rembrandts. Twee daarvan wist hij ook inderdaad te verkopen. Afgelopen vrijdag kreeg hij nog de Zilveren Eremedaille van de stad Maastricht, omdat hij zoveel voor deze plaats en de hele Euregio heeft betekend. Read more... Italian producer Carlo Ponti, who discovered a teenage Sophia Loren, launched her film career and later married her despite threats of bigamy charges and excommunication, has died in Geneva. He was 94. Ponti died Tuesday night at a Geneva hospital, his family said Wednesday. He had been hospitalized about 10 days earlier for pulmonary complications, it said.
He produced more than 100 films, including “Doctor Zhivago,” “The Firemen’s Ball,” and “The Great Day,” which were nominated for Oscars. Other major films included “Blow-Up,” “The Cassandra Crossing,” “Zabriskie Point” and “The Squeeze.”
