Johnny Bailey, a record-breaking running back in the small-college ranks and former NFL Pro Bowl kick returner, has died from pancreatic cancer. He was 43.

He was also selected by Dr. Death #2, Dr. Death #3, and Scott A. as their waiver wire pick up on July 1st. It’s been a banner month for those three lists, as both scored deaths in August have been on those three lists, and only those three lists. Scott A – the defending champion – has moved up from a dismal 10th place on August 1st to now #3 – and that’s in the money.

Bailey rushed for 6,320 yards. At the time, only he and Tony Dorsett at the University of Pittsburgh had run for more than 6,000 career yards.

He was a three-time NCAA Division II player of the year and was runner-up for the award as a freshman, when he ran for 2,011 yards. That made him at the time only the third college running back to top 2,000 yards in a season.

He rushed for more than 200 yards in his first four college games and had at least 100 yards in his first 11. He gained 7,803 all-purpose yards, an NCAA career record. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.

Bailey played 81 games and scored nine touchdowns in six seasons in the NFL after he was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the ninth round in 1990. He holds the team’s record for the longest punt return, when as a rookie he took one back 95 yards for a touchdown. Bailey also played two seasons in Phoenix and two with the Rams, one in Los Angeles and the next when the franchise moved to St. Louis.

Richie Hayward, co-founder of the Little Feat, an eclectic jamband that maintained a strong cult following throughout the decades, has died. He was 64.

The drummer had been suffering from liver cancer and died Thursday at a hospital near Vancouver, Canada, after complications of pneumonia, his publicist, Bridget Nolan, confirmed Friday.

“He was waiting for a liver transplant,” said Nolan. Over the past year, benefits had been staged on Hayward’s behalf; he had no health insurance.

In a letter to fans last August, Hayward wrote about his predicament, but sounded hopeful: “My intent is to come back to the band, as soon as I am physically able. Your love and support will mean a lot to me, more than I can say. I love and will miss you all, and I will see you again on the proud highway.”

He last performed with the band on July 11.

Hayward helped form Little Feat in 1969, along with frontman Lowell George, Bill Payne and Roy Estrada. The jamband mixed a variety of genres including rock, country, jazz and blues, and were known for songs like “Willin.” The group fell apart in 1979 after George died, but reformed in 1987, and had been a fixture on the touring circuit.

Besides his work with Little Feat, Hayward also performed with acts including Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, Buddy Guy and Barbra Streisand.

Mitch Miller, who – I’m not making this up – was known for his stiff-armed conducting style, let the rest of his body cash in on his arm’s patented style last Saturday. He crescendo’d after a brief illness called older-than-dirt.

Miller was an influential record producer who became a hugely popular recording artist and an unlikely television star a half century ago by leading a choral group in familiar old songs and inviting people to sing along. He had been an accomplished oboist and was still a force in the recording industry when he came up with the idea of recording old standards with a chorus of some two dozen male voices and printing the lyrics on album covers. The “Sing Along With Mitch” album series, which began in 1958, was an immense success, finding an eager audience among older listeners looking for an alternative to rock ’n’ roll. Mitch Miller and the Gang serenaded them with chestnuts like “Home on the Range,” “That Old Gang of Mine,” “I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen” and “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary.”

We had three scores with this hit – Boston Mike, Chris (who topped the charts with Miller as his #1 hit), and One Deadbeat Off. Congrats to all.

Sogen Kato – set to celebrate his 111th birthday – had visitors from the government, no doubt bringing him a cake or some fruit for the occasion.

When they knocked on the door, Kato’s granddaughter told the visitors that he “doesn’t want to see anybody”. The visitors persisted, and finally got in the house. And how did Mr. Kato greet them? Well, they found mummified skeletal remains lying in his bed. Mr. Kato may have been dead for 30 years according to Japanese authorities.

Here’s the story as it was reported by BBCNews.co.uk:

Welfare officials had tried to meet Mr. Kato since early this year. But when they went to visit, family members repeatedly chased them away, according to Tomoko Iwamatsu, an Adachi ward official.

Authorities grew suspicious and sought an investigation by police, who forced their way into the house on Wednesday.

They discovered a mummified body, believed to be Kato, lying in his bed, wearing underwear and pyjamas, covered with a blanket.

Mr Kato’s relatives told police that he had “confined himself in his room more than 30 years ago and became a living Buddha,” according to a report by Jiji Press.

But the family had received 9.5 million yen ($109,000: £70,000) in widower’s pension payments via Mr Kato’s bank account since his wife died six years ago, and some of the money had recently been withdrawn.

The pension fund had long been unable to contact Mr Kato.

“His family must have known he has been dead all these years and acted as if nothing happened. It’s so eerie,” said Yutaka Muroi, a Tokyo metropolitan welfare official.

The longest serving Senator Robert Byrd has died – years after many thought he was already dead.

Robert C. Byrd, who used his record tenure as a United States senator to fight for the primacy of the legislative branch of government and to build a modern West Virginia with vast amounts of federal money, died at about 3 a.m. Monday, his office said. He was 92.

Mr. Byrd’s death comes as Senate Democrats are working to pass the final version of the financial overhaul bill and win other procedural battles in the week before the Independence Day recess. In the polarized atmosphere of Washington, President Obama’s agenda seemed to hinge on Mr. Byrd’s health. Earlier this year, in the final days of the health care debate, the ailing senator was pushed onto the Senate floor in his plaid wheelchair so he could cast his votes.

Mr. Byrd served 51 years in the Senate, longer than anyone in American history, and with his six years in the House, he was the longest-serving member of Congress. He held a number of Senate offices, including majority and minority leader and president pro tem.

One player finally gets on the board (Just Great with his first death), plus six others earn points on this one. I’ll also mention at least two players tried to add him for the waiver wire (names due by midnight, June 30th), but he couldn’t hang on long enough to reward them.

Saramago died on 18 June 2010 at the age of 87. Saramago has been called “the finest Portuguese writer of his generation”, while Fernanda Eberstadt of The New York Times said he was “known almost as much for his unfaltering Communism as for his fiction”. Saramago’s translator, Margaret Jull Costa, paid tribute to him, describing his “wonderful imagination” and calling him “the greatest contemporary Portuguese writer”. Saramago had continued his writing until his death, his most recent publication, Cain, was published in 2009 with an English translation expected in late 2010. Saramago had suffered pneumonia a year before his death. Having been thought to have made a full recovery, he was scheduled to attend the Edinburgh Festival in August 2010. Saramago, described as a “militant atheist”, was outspoken in his political views, having delivered lectures as a Nobel laureate in his later life, once saying the treatment of Palestine by Israel was comparable to The Holocaust.

José was a solo shot, as many shots of José are. Dr. Death #2 scored the points, and vaulted into first place while he was at it. And all without the assistance of salt or a lime.
